Tough Day Two for Maple Leafs in Uruguay
The Canadian Maple Leafs - the Canadian development sevens side, has ended its run at the Punta del Estes Sevens tournament with a loss to Italy in the Plate Semi-final round on Monday evening in the summer resort town in Uruguay.
The Maple Leafs fell to the Italians 28-0, capping a hard day two of the tournament. Earlier in the evening the Canadians lost their Cup quarter-final match to URBA - a Argentinean based club tournament side from Buenos Aries by a 14-7 score.
John Moonlight had the only try for the Maple Leafs - with Phil Mack converting.
This resulted in a Plate semi-final spot against the Italians.
On the first night of the tournament - the Canadians easily won both their pool matches, blanking local club side Carrasco Polo Club 36-0 and doubling up on Toyota 7s - 28-14.
The Canadian Maple Leafs side tour was funded through exclusive efforts by the Canadian Rugby Foundation.
The Maple Leafs - as part of continuing development preparations, will now play in the Fiji Sevens event January 21st-23rd. Then Canada's full side begins its 2010 tournament cycle on the International Rugby Board Series - traveling to New Zealand for the Wellington Sevens on February 5-6, followed by the inaugural leg of the Las Vegas Sevens - on February 13-14.
